Comedian uses mix of brains, brassy spirit to elicit laughter

Comedy is tough. That concept is widely accepted to the degree that it is probably one of the most redundant ideas addressed in articles about comedians. Elusive is the comedy write-up that doesn’t include some nod toward the endless hours spent writing material; the less-than-glamorous life on the road; performing for small and/or unappreciative crowds; and the resilience necessary to keep following one’s dream after being worn down by rejection, mishap or — perhaps the most tragic of all comedic fates — simply being ignored.
