How to showcase

Okay, to all the up and coming comics this is the second in a series of advice from your girl Loni Love on making it as a comic. The topic is showcasing. Showcasing is when a comic is asked to do a few minutes for a potential gig. All comics showcase for shows, development deals, agents, comedy festivals, etc. So it is important to know how to showcase correctly.    I just got back from a showcase and I have to say, truthfully, there where nine comics that showcased but only four were good.  It was not  their material, it was a few simple mistakes  that I see time and time again that comics make that made their showcase sub-standard.  First thing, stay to your time, if the showcase time is eight minutes, do EIGHT minutes, not nine, not six, do EIGHT.  There were comics at this show case tonight that did well over eight minutes, a few did up to 15 minutes. This is totally disrespectful to the comics that are waiting to go on and believe me, the first three minutes of your set is your most important so that is what  most people listen to. ( All the late night shows ask for comics to do 4 minutes and 30 seconds not more) The comics that did the  15 minutes were not as funny as the comics that stayed to their time. But mostly when you go over the time, you look unprofessional.   Second,  know what the showcase is looking for. The showcase that I did was for Comedy Central. The network wanted two minutes of topical material and another six minutes of  the comics point of view.  When the sponsor of the showcase is asking for certain material, there is a reason for it so try to ensure that your set satisfies the need. Third, be yourself. When you are showcasing , do not  try to change your set or be someone else for the showcase. If you are asked to showcase, the sponsor likes you already and wants to see your act as is. Try to keep the lanaguage clean but don’t change your set to the point where you are not your real self.  You can do it. See you next time!!!
