I see and meet a lot of comics due to working on the road. They rock the comedy club in their home town. They want a chance to make it big, make some money. For some it will happen, but for most it will not. Here is my advice for breaking into comedy:
Write, write, write…write by yourself, get with other comedy pals and write the set of your life…
Tape all of your shows…even the little ones that you think don’t matter…you need a good demo tape so just tape all of your sets until you get a great set on tape.
Take some great funny pictures…
Submit yourself to comedy festivals, contests, comedy managers, agents…use google to search all things comedy.
Surround yourself with good comics. By this I mean comics that are constantly working and trying to get a break too.
You must be respectful to other comics, stop being bitter or jealous of other comics that get a break…work and worry about your act.
See you at the top!

Loni,
I need to post this up at every open mic and showcase! I’m not even in the big time yet, not even close, but I’m working and getting booked in the hottest clubs and venues in the area. The level of negativity that I’ve encountered from some of my peers is ridiculous. I’ve asked myself, “Is this the green room or high school?” Thanks for sharing. I really enjoy reading your post. It’s like Comedy College for free.
